Security passes. Each of these touchpoints represented both physical friction and transmission risk. The QR code emerged as the natural replacement — contactless, fast, verifiable.

Hospital and Healthcare Settings

Healthcare environments adopted QR codes rapidly because the stakes of contact were highest there. Patient wristbands contain QR codes with identifiers linking to medical records — scan instead of asking for a name and birthdate repeatedly. Visitor registration moved to QR-based check-in to eliminate shared clipboards. Prescription labels with QR codes allow instant lookup of drug information. Hospital wayfinding with QR scan-to-guide replaced printed maps.

In environments where minimizing surface contact is a health requirement, the contactless transaction becomes not just convenient but necessary design. QR is the technology that makes most contactless exchanges possible without special hardware on the user's side.

Construction and Job Sites

Construction sites have daily check-in requirements for safety compliance — a record of who was on site at what time, in case of incidents or exposures. Physical sign-in sheets are slow, require supervision, and create paper records that need manual archiving. QR-based check-in systems replaced them rapidly: workers scan a QR code at site entry, which logs the time and identity automatically to a digital system accessible to safety managers in real time.

Events and Ticketing

QR ticket scanning at events isn't new — it predates the pandemic. But the pandemic expanded the use case to include health verification: vaccine certificate QR codes, test result QR codes, capacity management QR systems. The technology's robustness under real event conditions (crowds, poor lighting, hurried scanning) validated QR as the right interface for high-throughput identity verification.
